Thankfully, there are many good ones; my recommendation is Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite (I've tried Norton and McAfee but I think Zone Alarm is better). I have been using this program for years and I'm very satisfied with it. I also recommend Ad-Aware 2007 Plus edition (for spyware; also includes real-time protection to prevent a lot of spyware from being installed). Spybot S&D is great, keep it and add Spyware Blaster (another program to prevent spyware from being installed). And last but certainly not least, you need a registry cleaner. A good free one is CCleaner. A better paid-for one is Registry Mechanic. I use all of these programs, keep them updated, and run frequent scans; I'm rarely troubled by malware. Start with the security suite. Keep running anti-virus and anti-spyware scans until you get a scan that turns up zero infections. Then add Ad-Aware and do the same. Do the same with Spybot. Spyware Blaster is not a scanner; it prevents spyware from being installed. After all scans turn up zero infections, run the registry cleaner as many times as needed until it finds zero problems. If you still can't get online reboot the router (each router is different, check your instructions about rebooting).
